‘AFTER THE RAIN’ reflects Aretha Brown’s connection to her ancestral Country in Nambucca and her memories of growing up on Nambucca Mission. The work draws on the distinct seasonal cycles of the region, particularly the rainy season when rivers and waterways flood and transform the landscape.

As a saltwater and freshwater person, this relationship is deeply important to Aretha. The fishing, boats and waterways speak to her connection to Country and identity. The work is also dedicated to her grandfather, Roger Brown, who taught her much
of what she knows about fishing, the ocean and her cultural connection to water.

The work was developed in the studio of Tony Albert, mentor and curator of the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia.

The title ‘AFTER THE RAIN’ is drawn from the Triennial, for which Aretha was commissioned to create the visual identity. The artwork is the only canvas painting developed for the exhibition, making it a unique extension of that visual language.
