‘BLAK X IRISH SOLIDARITY’ was developed from Aretha Brown’s collaboration with irish Hip Hop group Kneecap and explores solidarity between peoples who have experienced oppression and colonisation.

The balaclava draws on its political history and associations with protest, anonymity and protection, including its use by artists such as Pussy Riot. Aretha reworks the symbol through her own playful, feminine visual language, drawing on Aboriginalia and the influence of her mentor Tony Albert and his practice.

The work ultimately speaks to the strength that comes from people uniting in the face of oppression think Kneecap or Pussy Riot, but pink, Blak and powered by women.
