Developed during Aretha Brown's collaboration with Irish hip hop group Kneecap, Red & Pink Bally continues the Bally series by repeating and inverting the balaclava, treating it as a contemporary pop icon. Drawing on the visual language of activist movements such as the Guerrilla Girls and Pussy Riot, the work explores the relationship between contemporary protest and symbols of resistance.
The repetition reflects the collective rather than the individual, anonymous bodies united by a shared cause. Through bold colour and repetition, Brown transforms a familiar object into something both playful and political, challenging expectations while celebrating solidarity, visibility and collective action.
