‘WALKING HOME FROM IGA’ reflects Aretha Brown’s childhood growing up in Nambucca. She would take the long walk to IGA to escape the abuse happening inside her home. Her Pop lived nearby, so the walk also gave her somewhere safe to go and someone to visit.

Aretha painted the scene at night and represented herself as a skeleton, a recurring figure in her work that appears during moments of sadness.
